In celebration of Black History Month, the Jackson State University Welcome Center will host a seminar at noon on Thursday, Feb. 25, to provide updates on the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. It is the first state-sponsored civil rights museum in the United States. The museum, along with its companion, the Museum of Mississippi History, is slated to open in downtown Jackson in December 2017 as part of the Mississippi’s bicentennial celebration. The guest speaker for the seminar is Katie Blount, director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Blount will provide updates on the construction and program development that will include educating young people and the public about Mississippi’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History collects, preserves, and provides access to the archival resources of the state. Its public outreach includes exhibits, programs and publications for teachers and students. The seminar is free and open to the community and JSU family and friends are invited.
