Conference examines factors leading to obesity

The Jackson State University Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities/Institute of Epidemiology and Health Services Research, School of Health Sciences and College of Public Service is holding its 14th Annual Conference on Eliminating Health Disparities at the Jackson Convention Center Complex, 105 East Pascagoula Street, Jackson, Miss. 39201, October 16-17, 2014.

“With escalating disease associated with obesity, the theme of this year’s conference is “Obesogenics,” factors contributing to obesity, said Dr. Marinelle Payton. She is primary investigator and director of the Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities/Institute of Epidemiology and Health Services Research.

Payton says, “The conference will focus on topics addressing various parameters of obesity to promote health and wellness through disease prevention.”

Keynote speakers are Dr. John Ruffin, founding and former director of the National Institutes on Minority Health and Health Disparities with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, and Dr. Derrick C. Tabor, program director of the minority health disparities association in Bethesda.
