Quality of health care focus of RICE Bowl

Rapid development in the health care delivery field requires interdisciplinary teamwork — at least, that’s the basis for an upcoming competition involving Jackson State University students called the RICE Bowl.

The Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl is designed to unite a diverse pool of graduate students from multiple academic disciplines to address complex rural health issues.

To be held 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Jackson Medical Mall, JSU students will join three interdisciplinary student teams representing 12 academic disciplines, including business, health sciences, psychology, public health, pharmacy, social work, nursing, law and medicine.

According to its sponsors at the Office of Population Health and the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the competition provides an experiential learning opportunity for students to work in interdisciplinary teams to effectively address a realistic case scenario.

This case study approach encourages students to think comprehensively and beyond their own disciplines. As a result, students are better prepared to work in interdisciplinary teams to provide the highest quality of care to individuals and populations.

Students from Jackson State University’s graduate public health, social work, and psychology programs are slated to participate in the event. Jackson State faculty and students are invited to attend the competition and to support participating JSU students.
