ROTC scholarships for 2 incoming JSU freshmen total over $405,000

Two incoming freshmen at Jackson State University have landed ROTC scholarships totaling more than $405,000.

Melvin McCrory III is making history by becoming JSU’s first recipient of the prestigious national Commander’s Leadership Scholarship. The honor was presented during Senior Day at Lanier High School on Friday, May 15.

JSU’s Lt. Col. Timothy Henderson presented McCrory with the prestigious four-year Air Force ROTC scholarship, which was one of 8,200 offered nationwide. Henderson said the scholarship totals $252,658 and includes full tuition, textbook allowance and a monthly stipend. McCrory, who earned the rank of Cadet Captain at Lanier, plans to major in computer engineering at JSU. He said he aims to commission as second lieutenant after graduating from JSU or work as an industrial engineer for a major firm.

Also, JSU will welcome incoming freshman Melvin Williams Jr., another scholarship recipient. Williams is a graduating senior at Jim Hill High School and a recipient of the three-year advance Army ROTC scholarship, which totals $153,101. Williams is in the Dual Enrollment program at Jim Hill, where he earned the rank of Cadet Captain. He plans to attend JSU and major in biology with a concentration in physical therapy. Upon graduation from JSU, he said he wants to receive a commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and train as a physical therapist.
