School of Social Work professor appointed to serve on NANFED board

Smith/University Communications)Dr. Theresia Johnson-Ratliff, clinical assistant professor and MSW field director, has been appointed to serve as treasurer on the board of directors for the North America Network of Field Educators and Directors (NANFED).

NANFED is a network that collectively strives to independently represent field educators, support best practices and promote and celebrate quality field education.

“I became a member of NANFED in 2009, and from there, I was recommended to serve on the board of directors in 2014, by Dr. Leon Chestang,” says Johnson-Ratliff. “From his recommendation, I was appointed to serve on the NANFED board of directors, which is commissioned by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The CSWE is the national association representing social work education in the United States. Through its many initiatives, activities, and centers, CSWE supports quality social work education and provides opportunities for leadership and professional development, so that social workers play a central role in achieving the profession’s goals of social and economic justice. It is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States.

“My appointment will positively impact the School of Social Work by promoting the universities interest in field education; which is the pedagogy of social work education with CSWE,” says Johnson-Ratliff. “This appointment will also highlight the School of Social Work by recognizing its significant contributions to higher education through field education, and demonstrate excellence through leadership capabilities, which provides opportunities for student success at Jackson State.”

Johnson-Ratliff’s appointment requires a degree in social work and at least two years of experience as a director or coordinator of field education at a CSWE accredited school.
