Dr. Mitchell Shears, associate vice president for Student Success and executive director for Title III has been selected by The Woodson Fund as an HBCU Changemaker.
“I was surprised when I learned of this honor,” Shears said. “However, I was excited to learn that I was nominated by colleagues from other HBCUs. I have always shared my knowledge and skills with those who are open and willing to accept them. This recognition is evidence that others are watching the progress happening here at JSU.”
The Woodson Fund is the non-profit foundation for Woodson and Associates. It focuses on supporting students and potential students at HBCUs. The Changemakers list was established in 2019 and is composed of individuals who make HBCUs a success, including on-campus and community leaders.
R. Wayne Woodson, executive director for The Woodson Fund said, “The committee was extremely impressed with Shear’s professional impact. They gave special note to his work with Title III and Student Success. He is a highly regarded educator both in public and higher education spaces.”
The list also celebrates the positive work these individuals have accomplished as well as the monumental impact they have on the students. The work of The Woodson Fund is centered on access and advocacy and has the goal of empowering the next generation.
“Receiving this recognition encourages me to continue to research evidence-based strategies, create innovative student-centered programs and promote teamwork and collegiality in the HBCU space,” Shears said.
