Jackson State University unveiled its new on-campus Starbucks during a grand opening ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 24, on the ground floor of the H. T. Sampson Library, located on the university’s main campus.
Students, faculty and friends of JSU filled the room tasting everything from frappucinos to veggie wraps.
SodexoMAGIC, the university’s food services provider, brought Starbucks to the university to enhance the educational experience and improve the quality of campus dining.
“There may be problems at any university, but it is our promise that food won’t be one of them,” said Sanford Winfield, general manager for SoxedoxMagic at JSU.
“We want you as partners as we prepare the leaders of the next 21st century. This is a landmark moment, not only for us, but also the City of Jackson and the community,” said Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers, President of JSU.
The store is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. It will be closed on Saturdays. The menu consists of the normal product line of Starbucks and provides space for meetings and social gatherings on campus.
“Dr. Meyers is pushing for excellence on campus, and our job is to bring the best to Jackson State,” said Michael Thomas, JSU’s Vice President for Business and Finance. “We want you to come back, because we’re going to have a grand opening next Friday for Tiger Tech, the only Apple distinguished school in the state.”

The grand opening ceremony featured a ribbon cutting and light refreshments.
