U.S. Military Academy (USMA) cadets and staff will lead a West Point Leadership and Ethics Workshop on Friday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Jackson State University in the College of Engineering Building, Room 100. The workshop features a track for students and a track for educators, both focused on leadership, values and ethics, problem-solving, moral-reasoning and decision-making. The goals of the workshop are to provide participants with an opportunity to develop leadership and teambuilding skills; to reinforce the importance of ethical leadership in an increasingly technology-driven world; to promote ethics; and to underscore the importance of competent and diverse leadership in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Coordinated by Dr. Shonda Allen, associate director, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, this event is a part of Engineering Week offerings in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at the university.

Cadet First Captain Eugene “E.J.” Coleman will present the keynote address during the morning plenary session and will work with the 200 high school students expected to attend during their practical exercises. Coleman also will engage the educators with his experience of leading leaders.

“These events are great engagements to inspire young people about the tremendous opportunities available to them in the STEM fields, and also to learn about values, leadership and teambuilding from our cadets – the leaders of character we develop at West Point,” said Lt. Gen Robert Caslen, USMA superintendent.

The following cadets are scheduled to attend the event:

Chris Monroe,              Class of 2017 (Jackson, Miss.)

Marshall Moore,          Class of 2016 (Brandon, Miss.)

            Emily McGowan,         Class of 2018

            Quintesa Gould,           Class of 2016

The workshop is a collaborative effort of the West Point Society of Mississippi, Jackson Public Schools, Jackson Public Schools JROTC, Jackson State University and the West Point Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity.
