Dr. Jerry Watson, chair and associate professor of the Graduate Social Work Programs at Jackson State University, was recently appointed as a member of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to study racial, ethnic and cultural diversity. The three-year term is from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2018.
The Council on Racial, Ethnic and Cultural Diversity is part of the Commission for Diversity and Social and Economic Justice. It initiates new activities and programs related to ethnic minority groups in social work education. As well, it promotes research into issues relevant to minority educators, students and alumni.
In striving to address all issues related to minorities in social work education, the council facilitates communication between a wide variety of minority social work educator groups and CSWE. It also provides recommended policies, consultation and advice for the Board of Directors and CSWE staff.
Watson says it’s “an honor to serve on the council,” and his appointment will help address important issues through his involvement with the School of Social Work and the College of Public Service.
Serving as chair of the JSU Graduate Social Work Programs since fall 2014, Watson previously worked for the University of Mississippi as assistant professor. He has more than17 years of experience in social work and as an administrator and teacher. He received his doctorate from JSU in urban higher education in 2006.
