Jackson State University’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology hosted the annual Mississippi Region II Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18-19, 2014, in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
Close to 950 students from both public and private schools in Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Jefferson, Madison, Rankin and Warren counties participated in the two-day fair. Students presented projects in the areas of science, mathematics and technology. The lower fair for grades 1-6 was held Thursday. The upper fair for grades 7-12 was held Friday.
“The fair went extremely well. The level of support campus-wide was simply outstanding. Fair volunteers were great and judge participation was outstanding,” said Joe Whitfield, director of the Region II MSEF.
Alyssa Pennington, a senior at Murrah High School, was named 1st place overall winner. The second place, third place and Best of Fair winners were tenth-graders from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. The 2nd place overall winner was Andrew Neely, and the 3rd place overall winner was Nikhil Arora. The Best of Fair winner was Raveena Aggarwal.
First, second and third place winners from grades 7-12 will advance to the state fair which will be held in Greenville, Miss. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. The Best of Fair finalist and the 1stPlace overall winner will represent MSEF – Region II at the Intel International Science Engineering Fair, which will be held in Los Angeles, Calif., on May 11-16, 2014.
