(JACKSON, Miss.) — Jackson State University has appointed Carlos D. Wilson, Ph.D., as dean of the Division of Graduate Studies. Wilson has served as interim dean since May 2025 and previously served as associate dean of Graduate Studies.
A three-time JSU graduate, Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004, a master’s degree in 2006 and a Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education in 2012. He is a tenured associate professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and brings more than 20 years of academic and administrative experience to the role.
“Dr. Wilson understands graduate education from the perspective of a scholar, administrator and Jackson State alumnus,” said JSU President Denise Jones Gregory, Ph.D. “His leadership has strengthened important areas of Graduate Studies, including admissions processes, student support and academic standards. He brings the experience and steadiness needed to continue building programs that prepare our students for advanced scholarship, leadership and service.”
Before leading Graduate Studies, Wilson directed the School of Lifelong Learning in JSU’s College of Education and Human Development, where he expanded access for adult and returning learners through programs such as Complete 2 Compete and workforce partnerships. He has secured more than 20 grants in support of adult education, literacy and international training.
As interim dean, Wilson helped modernize graduate admissions and dissertation guidelines while supporting efforts to strengthen student success, research excellence and broader awareness of JSU’s graduate programs.
“It is an honor to serve my alma mater in a role that supports the next generation of scholars and professionals,” Wilson said. “Graduate education is central to JSU’s mission and future. My focus will remain on improving the graduate student experience from admission to graduation, expanding access, supporting faculty and ensuring our programs meet the needs of Mississippi and beyond.”
The Division of Graduate Studies supports graduate programs across the university and works with colleges, schools and departments to advance graduate enrollment, academic quality, research preparation and degree completion.
Wilson’s appointment is effective immediately.
