JSU alumni travel to New Orleans

All aboard!

A group of Jackson State University alumni and Tiger fans poured into the Amtrak Station in downtown Jackson Thursday in anticipation of boarding a train to New Orleans to support the Tigers as they faced the Tulane Green Wave at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Due to delays in the Amtrak train schedule, the fans waited a couple of hours before they were able to board. However, the time passed quickly as Gina Carter-Simmers, general manager of WJSU 88.5 FM, hosted the JSU version of NBC’s “Minute to Win It.” Alumni also participated in a raffle drawing and prizes were awarded.
As the train pulled into the station, the Tiger alumni quickly boarded the train and took their seats in the two-story car. JSU had a cabin reserved to themselves. This area with cushioned, reclinable chairs and spacious leg room quickly became JSU’s personal “party train.”
Alumni fellowshipped, shared laughs and listened to music, making the nearly four-hour ride enjoyable.

The ride concluded as the train halted in Amtrak Station-New Orleans. There alumni exited their car, picked up their luggage and were shuttled to The W Hotel-New Orleans.
After checking in, these JSU fans paraded to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their JSU fan gear by shuttle, taxi and foot. It was clear that the Tigers were in town.

The first night of the alumni trip concluded with the game against Tulane University. The Tigers fought hard but came up short in a 34-7 loss.
The team, fans, students and alumni were still encouraged as they lifted one finger and joined the Sonic Boom of the South’s tribute to Jackson State University by playing the school’s alma mater.

The alumni trip continues through Saturday, when fans will board the train back to Jackson.
