Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are known for having phenomenal homecomings. In fact, alumni and students from across the nation compete each year for the “who has the best homecoming” bragging rights. Each year, alumni and friends return to Jackson State’s campus for the anticipated seven-day extravaganza.
One of the most popular social events happens on Friday along JSU’s infamous plaza. The epic event is known as a yard fest. It is literally a festival providing various types of services for all to enjoy. This year, there was a disk jockey on site that provided the trendy and throwback music for all to enjoy. Vendors also were there to sell homemade soaps and shea butters, African attire, Greek apparel, books and so much more. Food trucks were on-site providing an assortment of tasty cuisines for the event.
“Yard fest is an awesome event,” says Vanetria Jones, 2016 alumna. “You never know what to expect but it’s a great time. Everyone comes back to socialize and just reminisce on all the memories JSU provided during their tenure on campus.”
2018 alumna Ashley Jones says, “We all know the yard is going to be lit on Friday so we plan to come in town on Thursday. It’s a great time. No other HBCU could ever do it the way Jackson State does it.”
“The yard is the place to be on Friday,” says CSET student Patrick Moore. “If you wanna see everybody and have a good time, come to campus around noon. You will thank me later.”
