Jackson State University chemistry professor Dr. Paresh Ray in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology is a recent recipient of the Mahatma Ghandi Award for his contributions to cancer research.

The honor, named for the preeminent Indian leader who espoused non-violent civil disobedience, is exclusive to natives making a notable impact in their professional fields and society.
Ray is the director of a diverse group of JSU researchers who share an interest in changing the way cancer is treated. According to MSNewsNow, the gist of Ray’s work is “rooting out early cancer signatures from as little as a single drop of blood. And then, on the same scale, the disease is attacked on the cellular level with smart bombs going to single selected targets instead of the chemotherapy carpet bombing approach being taken right now.”
Ray, who grew up in a tiny Indian village, said he is excited about the award and what it means to his family. He told WLBT-TV, “Mahatma Gandhi is like a godfather from India and, definitely, they will be very happy to see that from that village.”
Ray came to the university with years of research and industry experience, and it does not appear that he plans on slowing down or stopping his stellar work anytime soon.
