The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has named COB doctoral students Joye Norwood and Phylicia Taylor as recipients of its 2018 Minority Doctoral Fellowship. Both students will receive aid in the amount of $12,000 to assist them during their academic journey.
“It is an honor to be selected as a recipient for this fellowship. I appreciate the AICPA for providing financial support to me as I continue to work towards the completion of my doctoral degree,” said Norwood.
Minority doctoral fellows must be enrolled in a PhD program, be a United States citizen or permanent resident, CPA certified or plan to attain the CPA credential, have a master’s degree or have worked full-time in the profession of accounting for at least three years, and be an ethnic minority.
“This fellowship helps to ensure CPAs of diverse backgrounds are visible in college and university classrooms. The funding provided not only helps me with school-related experiences but also provides me with the opportunity to attend conferences and networking events that aid in advancing my career,” says Taylor. “As I continue to matriculate through the PhD program at Jackson State, I hope to fulfill the mission of the fellowship and be able to influence the individuals I meet.”
“The applications for fellowships and scholarships are very competitive, and there are currently no stipends available for graduate research or teaching assistantships for doctoral students within the College of Business so I think this is a great opportunity for both of us,” says Norwood.
