Jackson State University’s Institute of Government Mike Espy Scholars-in-Residence Series will present Dr. Helene D. Gayle in a symposium: “Closing the Gender Gap: Unleashing Social and Economic Power” at the JSU Student Center Theater, on the main campus, from 2-4 p.m., Thursday, March 31.

Gayle is the CEO of the McKinsey Social Initiative. Among her numerous leadership roles, she was formerly president and CEO of CARE USA, the first director of the National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention and director of the HIV, TB and Reproductive Health Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Forbes named her to its “100 Most Powerful Women” list; Foreign Policy magazine recognized her as one of the international “Top Global Thinkers;” and she was featured as one of Newsweek’s Top 10 “Women in Leadership.”

Gayle will have a “conversation” with a distinguished panel that has been assembled on her symposium topic. Comments and questions will also be fielded from the audience.

“The Institute of Government and the Jackson State University family are extending an invitation to the public, area university academic units and professionals and organizations in the field of public health to attend the symposium,” said Dr. Otha Burton, executive director of the IOG at Jackson State.

The Espy symposiums provide the general public and university communities with in-depth research topics, seminars on current public policy issues, or forums on executive and legislative roles and problem-solving solutions. Other presenters in the series have included former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and former Mississippi Secretary of State Eric Clark.

JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers named the flagship series after the first symposium that featured Espy.

The mission of the JSU Institute of Government (IOG) is to provide leadership development, research, consulting and training aimed at assisting urban regions and public service organizations in delivering effective and efficient services that meet constituent needs and enhance stability, growth and sustainability of communities.
