JSU staff member Doug Stringfellow is among honorees at the Jackson Music Awards on Aug 1.

Doug Stringfellow, the sound technician and stage manager for Jackson State University’s events department, will be honored at the 42nd Annual Jackson Music Awards (JMAA)  at the Marriott Hotel downtown  Aug 1.

Conceived by JMAA president Jesse Thompson, the long-established music award ceremony recognizes the achievements of Mississippi’s exceptional music artists in the gospel and rhythm-and-blues industry.

Stringfellow serves at the lead sound mixer for the multi-member JMAA production crew. He will be one of three members honored for remarkable service and commitment.

Thompson said, “Mr. Stringfellow has been a part of the production team for 20-plus years. He is one of the audio, video, stage-coordinators for our award events, so we’re acknowledging the people behind the scenes and want to let them know we appreciate their contributions. We’ve always had excellent production over the years, and it’s time to give them their flowers while they’re here.”

Stringfellow, who has more than 38 years in the production business, said he is overwhelmed by the honor, “I’m very grateful. … I’ve been associated with the awards since the early ’80s. I’ve received a lot of connections from working with the music awards that have carried over into today.”

Accustomed to the anonymity of working behind-the-scenes, Stringfellow also said, “I’m not used to [the] attention. I didn’t sign up for that. People have congratulated me, and it’s hard for me to receive it. I am humbled, but I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do.”

The award show begins at 6 p.m. and will be hosted by JSUTV’s Robert “Rob Jay” Jeuitt, executive director of JSU Sports Media, and WJMI’s Alice Marie. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.
