JSU recently joined forces with the American Heart Association (AHA) to assist in the fight against heart disease and stroke in the state of Mississippi by raising a total of $13,710.
The AHA is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the nation’s top cause of death, and stroke ranks second globally; and even when those conditions don’t result in death, they diminish the quality of life.
Led by First Lady Deborah Bynum, Jackson State alumni, students, and employees participated in the Metro Jackson Heart Walk sponsored by the American Heart Association in an effort to build a culture of health in the community.
“JSU became the second largest fundraising company in the competition this year. This is truly incredible, especially considering that this is the university’s first year participating in our event,” says Whitney Morehead, heart walk director for American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association has invested more than $4.1 billion in research more than any U.S. nonprofit organization.
“The Heart Walk brought the JSU community together because everyone had an opportunity to meet new campus partners and that resulted in synergy. Teamwork and collegiality as it relates to the president’s pillar is what we witnessed that day,” says Dr. Susan Powell, associate vice president for Student Affairs.
