The HBCU sports community wrapped up the year, celebrating excellence across conferences like the SWAC, MEAC, CIAA, SIAC, HBCUAC, and independent programs. At the center of all the excitement, Jackson State University stood as a beacon of achievement, showcasing what it means to be a JSU Tiger and the hallmarks of the HBCU experience.
“These honors reflect the incredible talent, dedication and spirit of our students, coaches and community. We’re proud to be part of a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift the entire HBCU family. When we say, ‘Thee I Love,’ we are talking about a place where dreams thrive, and history is made,” said JSU President Marcus L. Thompson, Ph.D., who is in Pasadena, California, for the Sonic Boom’s performance in the Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan 1.
This year’s 2024 HBCU Legends Honors, driven by votes from media experts and passionate fans, highlighted the game-changers in HBCU sports. And Jackson State? They didn’t just show up—they showed out—winning big across multiple categories and further cementing their reputation as a powerhouse in the HBCU world.
Players and Coaches:
- Irv Mulligan, the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, was named one of five HBCU Student-Athletes of the Year, representing Jackson State and the SWAC alongside standout athletes from other conferences.
- T.C. Taylor, head coach of the Tigers, shared the HBCU Coach of the Year honor after leading Jackson State to an HBCU National Championship and a historic Celebration Bowl victory. His co-honoree, Eddie George of Tennessee State, further underscored the caliber of leadership within HBCU athletics.
- Ashley Robinson, Jackson State’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, added to the university’s storied legacy by earning the coveted title of HBCU Athletic Director of the Year, recognizing his vision and commitment to athletic prowess.
The Tigers also made headlines with the HBCU Story of the Year award for their victorious appearance at the 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl. This win encapsulates the energy and resilience of Jackson State athletics, inspiring fans nationwide.

The Sonic Boom:
The Sonic Boom of the South, synonymous with Jackson State’s rich history and culture, was named one of five HBCU Bands of the Year. This recognition celebrates Sonic Boom’s role in elevating the art of marching band performances while serving as a cultural ambassador for the University.
HBCU Brand of the Year
Perhaps the most significant honor, HBCU Brand of the Year, solidified Jackson State University’s position as the nation’s premier HBCU institution. This award highlights the University’s ability to transcend sports, embodying a legacy of greatness and innovation that resonates far beyond the playing field.
