JSU announces Staff Leadership Institute

Jackson State University announces the second cohort of its Staff Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute features three modules, “Develop your Brand: Discover your Leadership Style,” “Leadership Challenges in Team Setting: Conflict Resolution and Collaboration” and “Leadership Refinement: Alignment of Personal and Organizational Values.”

Participants include:  Shirley Carpenter, Jill Chaney, Alla Frank, Kamesha Hill, Dorothy Huddleston, Tamara Preston, Kedra Taylor, Stephen Okoye, Louise Vaugn, Macy Russell, Christie Mickell, Kimberly Horton, Tina Collier, Frances White, Latasha Wells, Floressa Hannah, Tiffany Gray, Mona Brown  and Martisha Morgan.

The first part of the first module was presented on April 23 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Jackson with speaker Dr. Calvin Mackie. Mackie is founder of Channel ZerO Group, LLC, an educational and motivational consulting company. Mackie is the 2003 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Dr. Alisa Mosley, associate professor of management and director of the Center for University Scholars at JSU, will speak on May 7. Module two, entitled “Leadership Challenges in Team Setting: Conflict Resolution and Collaboration,” will convene on May 28 and June 4. Dr. Mary White, chairperson of the JSU Department of Entrepreneurship and Professional Development, will speak on May 28. The June 4 session highlights Dr. Theresa Bland Green, CEO at STAR Leadership Consulting, as its keynote speaker. “Leadership Refinement: Alignment of Personal and Organizational Values” will be the topic of the last module, which will take place on June 13 and June 27. WLBT News anchor Maggie Wade is the featured speaker for both sessions.

The goals of the Staff Leadership Institute are to:

  • Provide a framework to encourage and recognize performance excellence and professional development;
  • Strengthen engagement and the bond between staff and the university;
  • Establish goals that are employee-driven and peer-reviewed;
  • Provide a mechanism which creates opportunities that may ensure one’s career ladder is not static but fluid and dynamic;
  • Assess and enhance the staff leadership culture of the university; and
  • Build technologically advanced and efficient streams of communication across functional areas.
