A special program to commemorate the Voting Rights Act of 1965 will be held Tuesday at the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute at COFO.
The event is highlighted by an evening with U.S. District Court Judge Carlton W. Reeves, according to Jean C. Frazier, state relations coordinator, JSU Division of Institutional Advancement.
To be held from 6-8 p.m., the event at the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) building, 1400 John R. Lynch St. on the JSU campus, is free and open to the public.
The 50th Commemoration of the march in Selma, Ala., provided the impetus for the event. Reeves will discuss the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and his recent sentencing of the defendants responsible for the death of James Anderson in 2011. There will also be a panel of students to discuss the College of Liberal Arts sojourn to Birmingham in 2013 through this year’s travel to Selma, Ala.
It is hosted by the JSU Division of Institutional Advancement, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Fannie Lou Hamer Pre-Law Society of JSU.
