JSU continues upward enrollment trend with spring over spring increase

(Jackson, MS) – Jackson State University had another record increase with its spring 2014 enrollment.

This spring, 8,812 students are enrolled at JSU, a nearly 1 percent increase over last spring’s enrollment of 8,760. The 2014 figure is the highest ever for a spring enrollment.

JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers said JSU has a reputation of offering quality programs in a nurturing environment.

“Our students and their families recognize that Jackson State University provides a solid educational foundation for success in the 21st century,” Meyers said. “Our quality faculty and staff are committed to preparing tomorrow’s global leaders.”

Meyers said the spring over spring increase aligns with the Enrollment Management Plan executed by the Enrollment Management Council. Last year, JSU opened a site in Madison to accommodate non-traditional and working students. The university plans to open a downtown site to house its Institute of Government later this year.

“As we continue to grow, we’re investing in academics, faculty development and infrastructure,” said Dr. James C. Renick, JSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We recently opened our Innovate center so faculty and staff will have all the resources they need to develop digital curriculum, assignments and class projects to enhance the educational experience for our students.”

Alexis Floyd, a 19-year-old freshman from Greenville, S.C., said she looked at a number of universities, but settled on JSU because of its meteorology program.

“Since I’ve been here, all my expectations have been met,” Floyd said. “My instructors are very attentive and there’s a real sense of community.”

Taha Merghani, a freshman from Sudan who is majoring in computer engineering, said his college experience has been engaging.

“I’ve made a lot of friends and I like the society of people,” he said. “The professors have walked me through the process. Everyone has been supportive.”
