JSU International Studies hosts Fulbright Gateway orientation

Fullbright edited-2The Jackson State University Division of International Studies is hosting a group of 25 Fulbright students and scholars from 20 countries August 26-30  for the Fulbright Gateway Orientation Program.  The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as part of the Fulbright Program and administered by the Institute of International Education.

During the program participants will acquire knowledge on various aspects of academic and cultural life of students in U.S. universities and colleges, including U. S. colleges and universities’ academic requirements, the U.S. political system with its history and political culture, expected interpersonal behavior in various social, academic, and professional situations, adjusting to U.S. Culture, managing culture shock, and other topics.

Fullbright edited-1Participants will also learn about the Fulbright tradition of leadership and speak with current Fulbright foreign students on how to be an ambassador for their cultures.  Program participants will be immersed in southern culture by visiting museums in Jackson and the Vicksburg National Military Park where they will learn about the significance of the south in general and Vicksburg, in particular, during the Civil War.  The program will close with a tour and closing dinner in the Antebellum Mansion, which features culture and history of the pre-Civil War South.
