The Gannett Foundation and The Clarion-Ledger awarded $32,000 in grants to 13 nonprofit organizations Tuesday morning.
“We’re putting money where our mouths are. … We’re pleased to help you support your programs,” Clarion-Ledger Publisher Leslie Hurst told recipients in a ceremony at the paper’s downtown office.
The Mississippi Children’s Museum received a grant to help fund its literacy garden, set to open in the spring.
Chief Operating Officer Susan Garrard said the garden will be an outdoor gallery with sculptures, an edible garden and exhibits that “explore literature in nature.”
“Literacy is an important foundational mission for the museum, so this garden is a very important piece in the development of these experiences,” said Garrard.
Jackson State University’s Mass Communication Department also received a grant. Professor Sunny Fridge said the department will buy mobile devices like iPods, iPads and digital cameras so students can participate in a mobile journalism project.
“It’s a way for our students to tell stories in a different way. … Sometimes the best story is (told with) whatever camera you have in your hand, so we want to go mobile,” she said.
The Community Grant Program supports nonprofits in communities Gannett serves by awarding them funds to execute programs that serve the greater good.
