JSU student military honored for service

This week, in observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, a Jackson State University student military or veteran service member will be highlighted each day for service.

Throughout the year, other service members will also be noted.

Today’s student is:

Casher, 45, grew up in Jackson, a 1987 graduate of Murrah High School

Branch of Service:  U.S. Army Reserve

He served from 1988 to 2004 and saw activity in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

Rank: Specialist

He is a second year doctoral student in public health, health policy management.

He started at JSU in 2013 after receiving his masters degree in public policy administration with a concentration in health care administration at JSU in 2010.

He plans to receive his Ph.D. in the fall of 2016.

His favorite activities? “I work for the division of graduate studies,” he said. “My passions are tennis, hunting.”

He is married, and his daughter Victoria E. Casher is a senior at JSU.

 

Last month, Jackson State University was named a 2015 “Military Friendly” school by Victory Media.

 

The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and to ensure their success on campus.

 

There are more than 370 veterans and military students on campus and this number is growing, according to Tim Abram, director of the JSU Veterans and Military Center.
