A student-led effort is urging the Jackson State University community to donate supplies to waterlogged areas in Crosby after severe flooding paralyzed southwestern parts of Mississippi.
According to reports, damage in the affected area represented by state legislator Angela Cockerham, a JSU alum, wasn’t enough to meet the criteria for funds through federal declaration of disaster. So, JSU is lending a helping hand.
SGA Vice President Isaac Gaines said, “This effort will help bring comfort to a number of area residents and show our compassion to the state. We’re asking for donations such as toiletries and bottled water for victims.”
In general, items being collected on the first floor of the main drop-off site at the JSU Student Center include water, cleaning supplies, paper products, school supplies and wipes.
“JSU has a lot of students from that affected area of Mississippi, not to mention areas of Louisiana that have been flooded, too,” Gaines said.
Other drop-off sites include the Downtown location at 101 Capitol Street, Jackson Medical Mall, the Madison campus and the Mississippi e-Center@JSU.
Monetary donations also are being arranged in addition to supplies, which may be dropped off indefinitely from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, starting today. Students who’d like to volunteer should complete this form.
