Christmas became much jollier for tots and teens when Jackson State University rolled out a fleet of bicycles to be delivered to the city’s youth.
President Carolyn W. Meyers and her staff presented the Salvation Army of Jackson with nearly 60 bicycles for foster children and other needy youngsters.
With dozens of bicycles overtaking her garage, Meyers said, “I heard on the news about the shortage of giving. I felt this was something we could do to lighten up little faces all over Jackson. It doesn’t get much better than this.”
Also, Meyers said, “It’s just a matter of everybody remembering that Christmas is about joy. Not everyone needs another pair of earrings or cuff links or a wine basket. Because of the generosity of Jackson State, we define what Christmas is all about.”
Ken Chapman, area commander for the Salvation Army, said, “It takes visionary leadership to guide and change people’s heart. Together, when we join hands, we make Jackson stronger and Christmas better for children.”
Chapman added, “This is a godsend. Jackson State University is setting a precedent for other agencies, universities and businesses in our area to show that we all care about our community.”
In lieu of other gifts, Meyers gave several JSU employees bicycles. The employees, in turn, gifted the bikes to the Salvation Army, which will distribute the items to youth before the holiday.
Meyers purchased the bikes at Walmart, which also donated several of the shiny, new presents.
