The online master’s in history program has been ranked No. 3 among 16 universities according to a report released by affordablecollegesonline.org. The ranking is based on four criteria: acceptance rates, graduation rates, cost of tuition and the number of full-time students.
“This honor represents a major victory for Jackson State University and the Department of History and Philosophy,” said Dr. Mario Azevedo, dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Also professor and chair of the History Department, Azevedo said that he was pleased to beat out such well-known institutions like Indiana State University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, University of Memphis, Western Kentucky University, the University of North Alabama, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. “This encourages us to put further efforts to improve our program and make it second to none in the country,” he concluded.
Only accredited, public, not-for-profit institutions with at least one online program were eligible for these rankings.
“The program’s success would not be possible without the hard work my colleagues put in every semester developing the classes for our program and teaching the students,” said Dr. Mark Bernhardt, professor and graduate program director for the Department of History and Philosophy.
CEO and Founder of AffordableCollegesOnline.org, Dean Schuessler said that in their seventh annual survey of online learning programs across the nation, they wanted to honor the colleges and universities that are providing innovative ways for students to complete a degree. “These schools are going above and beyond the industry standard to help make online education programs more accessible and affordable,” Schuessler added.
