Margaret Walker Center hosts series on Muslim faith, culture in US

The Mississippi Humanities Council has received a $4,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to host two five-part reading and discussion series titled “Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys.”
Jackson State University’s Margaret Walker Center will have a part in the project, which seeks to familiarize public audiences in the United States with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.
Points of Pride - Margaret Walker Center - Ayer Hall
The Margaret Walker Center will host the first of these two five-part discussion series in Ayer Hall on the JSU campus.  The featured books include:
  1. Prince Among Slaves: The True Story of an African Prince Sold into Slavery in the American South by Terry Alford;
  2. The Columbia Sourcebook of Muslims in the United States by Edward Curtis, editor;
  3. Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, in the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation by Eboo Patel;
  4. A Quiet Revolution: The Veil’s Resurgence, from the Middle East to America by Leila Ahmed; and
  5. The Butterfly Mosque by G. Willow Wilson.

Discussions will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Margaret Walker Center, located in historic Ayer Hall on the JSU campus. On Sept. 12, it will include an open house and reception beginning at 4 p.m. in Ayer Hall.
