
Spencer McClenty has been named interim executive director of University Communications where he provides primary oversight of communications, marketing and public relations for the University.

McClenty joined Jackson State university in 2006, as the operations and marketing specialist in the Department of Contractual Services and later joined University Communications in 2008 as creative writer. While serving in this role, McClenty initiated all of the university’s social media-based communications efforts. Because of his professionalism and creative abilities, McClenty was appointed to the position of new media coordinator, and later, social media director.
Most recently, McClenty served as associate director of University Communications – Digital Media, where he is responsible for managing the department’s digital communications efforts, which covers social media, website management, videography and mobile apps.
While serving in these roles, McClenty has achieved many notable accomplishments and has received nearly a dozen awards and recognitions from various local and national organizations – including PRNews Digital Awards, Education Digital Marketing Awards, HBCUgrow Conference and CPRAM – for his work in digital communications. He has also served as a featured presenter on the topic of digital media at multiple national and local conferences and a featured guest on the webinar series, “Higher Ed Social Media.”
Under McClenty’s leadership, JSU’s social media pages consistently rank among the top schools in the nation. Most recently, Jackson State University’s official Facebook page was ranked third among all NCAA Division 1 Universities in the United States (Rivals IQ).

McClenty is a native of Jackson, Miss., and a two-time graduate of Jackson State University (2006, 20018) earning a B.A. and M.A.in mass communications. He enjoys spending time with his family and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. He and his wife have two beautiful children.
