2015 Miss JSU Pageant competition takes trip down memory lane with Roaring ’20s

MISS JSU PAGEANT 2015 - 1The Roaring ’20s is making a comeback at Jackson State University as young women begin competition in the Miss JSU Pageant at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Rose E. McCoy Auditorium.

Inspired by the fashion, music and energy of the 1920s, reigning Miss JSU Anissa Butler said the “Gatsby” theme will mark the first phase of the competition. In each of the four phases, contestants will display their beauty, talent, poise and intellect, said Tinna Holt, adviser to Butler and assistant director of Student Leadership.

Holt said, “The first phase is onstage question; the second is Tiger Pride; the third phase showcases their talents; and the last phase is evening wear.”

Butler said she believes the Gatsby theme will “spark a flame of fun for the audience.” Dr. Kimberly Morgan-Myles, a former Miss Mississippi and finalist for Miss America, is the pageant’s consultant. She said the audience should look forward to an exciting and fresh pageant, saying it will consist of “jazz music, swing and modern music that will fit the theme of the production.”

As a former queen of Alcorn State University, Morgan-Myles will provide words of support to young contestants. “I encourage the girls to be themselves and represent their parents and Jackson State University.” She hinted that there would be several surprise guests in attendance who will offer special tributes to Butler’s reign and her platform, “A.I.M.,” an acronym for Academic Excellence, Image and Mentorship.

While emphasizing high standards for her successor, Butler urges the winner to savor every moment after being crowned. “It’s an important job,” said Butler,  “but don’t forget to enjoy your job.” As a fan of “The Great Gatsby” film and the Harlem Renaissance, Butler said she was inspired to incorporate the theme into the pageant to add a different flavor from previous pageants.

She offers well wishes to each contestant – any of whom she believes would make a great ambassador for the university. Finally, to each person vying for the crown, Butler said, “Always have high A.I.Ms!”

Admission to the Miss JSU Pageant is $5. Voters can cast their ballots Friday, April 10. For further information, contact Holt at 601-979-3309 or tinna.l.holt@jsums.edu.
