(Jackson, MS) — WJSU-FM (88.5) unveiled a new documentary program Friday, Dec. 20, spotlighting issues from homelessness to illiteracy that poor and disenfranchised Americans face.
Breaking Ground’s debut segment, “Yesterday’s Dropout,” examined the 30 million people nationwide who quit school and the hundreds of thousands returning to the classroom every year as adults to learn how to read.
To coincide with the story, WJSU discussed Mississippi’s disproportionate illiteracy crisis during its 5 p.m. “News Now Update” on Friday, Dec. 20 with the Woman’s Missionary Union in Jackson. The organization aims to reverse statistics showing rates as high as 30 percent in some of the state’s most impoverished counties.
