Jackson State’s Bachelor of Social Work field director and clinical assistant professor Candace Riddley has been chosen by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant to serve on the Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists.
“I am honored to have received this appointment by Governor Bryant,” says Riddley. “This four-year appointment is a major milestone in my professional career.”
The Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists purpose is to ensure that the public is protected from the unprofessional, improper, unauthorized and unqualified practice of social work and marriage and family therapy.
Ahfiya Howard, interim department chair for the Bachelor of Social Work program says, “I am elated that the School of Social Work will have an in-house expert that can provide guidance regarding Mississippi’s’ licensure policies and requirements for students, faculty and professionals.”
Riddley is a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) with over 13 years of practice experience in the field of social work and more than four years of service in her position at JSU.
In order to be eligible as a member of the BOE, Riddley had to meet the following qualifications:
- A licensed social worker in the state of Mississippi in good standing.
- Able to attend and participate fully in ALL scheduled BOE meetings, with the understanding that resignation from the Board must be submitted if three consecutive scheduled meetings are missed.
- Appointed by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor in accordance with the Act from nominations submitted by the Mississippi chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and the Mississippi Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and be confirmed by the state senate.
“During my tenure, I plan to uphold the integrity of my profession by working towards promoting high standards of professional performance of those engaged in the practice of social work,” says Riddley. “I look forward to serving and continuing my commitment to the Board and all social workers throughout the state of Mississippi.”

Riddley is an active member of the Clinton, MS alumnae chapter for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She and her husband Otis have one son, Quentin.
