The STEM STARS Institute at Jackson State University in partnership with the NASA Stennis Center will be offering science- and mathematics-based educational professional development workshops.
The STEM STARS Institute, located on JSU’s campus, is an interdisciplinary science and mathematics institute with the goal of improving the quality of science and mathematics education in the Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi region. It was formed in partnership with the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Xavier University of Louisiana and higher education partners in various K-12 school districts.
The STEM STARS Institute is establishing a wide range of academic year and summer activities for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and K-12 students. NASA educators will conduct a series of science and mathematics professional development workshops for K-12 teachers that will provide the teachers with lesson plans based on space exploration.
A specific NASA education topic will be the focus of each workshop. These workshops will integrate NASA missions, real-world data, lesson plans and online resources that will enhance the elementary and secondary school curriculum with the thrill of aerospace exploration. Unique interactive activities and materials that the teachers can share with students also will be provided.
Workshops will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 16 for elementary school teachers and at 9 a.m. Feb. 17 for middle and high school teachers in the Mississippi e-Center NASA Resource Room.
Students also are invited to participate in a space investigation day being held by NASA at 9 a.m. Feb. 18.
