Stiletto-Brass-LogoThe Jackson State University College of Liberal Arts will present the dynamic Stiletto Brass Quintet in public performances at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 23 in the Jimmie James Jr. Recital Hall, F. D. Hall Music Center on the university’s main campus. The recital is part of Artistic Intensity, JSU’s 2016 Visual and Performing Arts Series.

Dr. David O. Akombo, interim chair of the JSU Department of Music, said, “The Visual and Performing Arts Series allows us to bring in highly artistic performers from around the United States. They are exceptional not only because of their performance quality but also because of their diversity.”

Stiletto Brass Quintet, formed in 2010, has gained national and international acclaim as a leading ensemble. Stiletto features five highly accomplished women from the U.S. with careers spanning the fields of orchestral, wind band and brass chamber music including: Amy Gilreath and Cathy Leach, trumpets; Misty Tolle, horn; Nicole Abissi, trombone; and Velvet Brown, tuba.

The group, as highlighted in the August 2012 international brass magazine The Brass Herald, reflects timely changes in the music scene. Its energetic and diversified repertoire includes avant-garde compositions written by leading composers of our time, as well as classical and popular works ranging from the Baroque period to Gershwin.

This is the quintet’s first performance at JSU.

The performance is free and open to the public. Tuba and euphonium instructor in the Department of Music, Patrick Rettger, serves as coordinator for this event. Donations are accepted to support the series, entering its third year.
