Jackson State University’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program has received its five-year reaccreditation from the American Psychological Association. JSU is one of two HBCU’s to have an APA-accredited clinical psychology doctoral program.

Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Mario J. Azevedo said, “The re-accreditation of our program is great news for the Department of Psychology, the College of Liberal Arts and the University. I wish to congratulate all faculty and staff that worked on having the program’s accreditation reaffirmed, especially Dr. Bryman Williams, who spearheaded the effort, and Dr. Pamela Banks, the department chair.

In 1995, Mississippi’s Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning gave approval for the University to begin its Ph.D. program in clinical psychology with an inaugural class of six doctoral candidates. The APA awarded the program accreditation in 2001, and the first doctoral dissertation defense occurred in 2002. The program was first reaccredited in 2005, again in 2010 and now the program has earned its third reaccreditation.

“As a graduate of this program, it has been a great pleasure to help advance our clinical program which has graduates who are practicing clinical psychology at medical centers, private practices, VA hospitals, and academic institutions nationally,” said Dr. Bryman Williams, director of clinical training in JSU’s Department of Psychology.
