If you’re looking for an evening of cool live jazz, you might not want to miss “A Night of Musical Artistry” Saturday, Dec. 13, at JSU’s Rose E. McCoy Auditorium.
Presented by the Mississippi Jazz Foundation, the 7 p.m. event features Kindred the Family Soul and Mike Burton and the Good Times Brass Band, with actor Palmer Williams Jr. as host.
The annual jazz celebration, usually held the second Saturday in December, is a much anticipated event, said Ann Burton, president of the nonprofit foundation.
“We’ve been doing this for the last 11 years,” Burton said. “We honor people in the community who have given much to the arts.”
Honorees include Dr. Louis Liddell, former JSU band director; Ruth Randall, former high school chorale director at Raymond High School; Chalmers Davis, keyboard player for Little Richard; Lee King, concert promoter and founder/host of Black Gold Television Show; Dale Morris, musician/bass player; Sondra Bell, jazz vocalist and choir director; and Kryshun Chaffin, classical pianist and student at Murrah High School.
This will be the second year the jazz celebration has been held at JSU, Burton said. Previously, it had been held at the historic Alamo Theatre on Farish Street, “but we outgrew that,” she said.
Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at the box office, from any foundation member or any ticketmaster outlet.
