Members of the Jackson State University National Alumni Association Inc. strutted their stuff Friday at the Black Tie Scholarship and Recognition Gala.
This year titled Celebrating the Spirit of Giving for One JSU, the Oct. 24 event at the Jackson Convention Complex hosted hundreds of JSU alumni, fans and supporters.
Memorable highlights:
— Noting the need for endowments and university giving, JSU President Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers said “We must take care of our institutions if we want them to thrive in the 21st century.” The packed crowd, she said, is “proof” that alumni believe in education, enabling students to “build castles” and allowing JSU to thrive.
— Dr. Timothy Quinn, M.D., Quinn Healthcare, PLLC, honorary chair, saying that “Jackson State took a chance on me” by allowing him admission when he was an athlete, saying he is grateful to give back.
— Dr. Juanita Sims-Doty, founder, Juanita Sims-Doty Foundation and honorary chair, saying “I am honored” to be a part of the alumni scholarship effort.
— State Rep. Angela Cockerham, recalling being a JSU student 20 years ago, and now thankful for “my dear old college home.”
