Jackson State University is embarking on a plan to review and clean up the JSU Banner system of information, according to Dr. Shemeka Sutton-McClung, Director of Planning, Assessment, and Accreditation.
This data clean-up will begin Monday, March 23, and conclude June 30, she said.
“The initiative is to review the data management system, ensuring that data are accurate,” according to Dr. James C. Renick, provost and senior vice president for Academic and Student Affairs.
The initiative is university wide and includes all staff, faculty and students, Renick said.
“The acquisition of reliable data is necessary for understanding, interpreting, and creating pictorial representations of the University. Our numbers are who we are, what we represent, and the progress we’ve made in measuring our student successes,” McClung said.
“We’re serious about data integrity,” Renick said.
What Will the Data Clean-Up Look Like? “Our data clean-up project will involve multiple individuals assisted by Ellucian,” said McClung. “Each Banner module (Advancement, Financial Aid, Finance, General, Human Resources, Student, and Travel and Expense) will be reviewed and data cleaned for accuracy in reporting.”
In addition, she said, it will “involve review of data reporting standards with stewards of the various data modules.“
“Lastly,” McClung added, “our data clean-up will involve training and support of reporting personnel to correct and ensure that all reported data is accurate and complete.”
“It is absolutely essential that close working relationships are maintained with all Banner system managers and users in ensuring that data is collected and entered correctly and is easily accessible to the University community,” McClung said.
Institutional Research serves as the University’s clearinghouse for all data reports. This includes reports to the Mississippi Board of Trustees for Institutions of Higher Learning, regular reports to the federal government, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and other ad hoc reports.
Institutional Research collects, stores, and analyzes data, performs key studies, secures and provides relevant management information, coordinates and shares data and serves as the official institutional source for data and analytical information about the University.
