More than 100 JSU scholars inducted into nation’s premiere honor society

113 JSU scholars were inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Jackson State University is pleased to announce that 113 of its scholars were inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) on Thursday, April 4.

NSCS is the nation’s leading certified honor society for high-achieving first- and second-year college students with a minimum GPA of 3.4.

Mya Thomas, a junior computer science major from Memphis, Tenn., and Daeja Sawyer, a sophomore criminal justice major from Jackson, Miss., are among the new inductees.

Mya Thomas is a first generation college student.

“I’m really proud of myself because I’m a first-generation college student, so I’m paving the way,” said Thomas, who aspires to have a career in technology. “For this to be my second time being invited to an honor society, I feel accomplished. I really hope to inspire my family members to attend college.”

Sawyer wants to become a lawyer and fulfill her passion for advocating for others. Noticing a lack of Black women’s representation in the criminal justice system, she strives to bridge that gap. She views her induction to the NSCS honor society as an encouragement to pursue her ideal career.

“This shows my determination, and it means a lot to me. It’s also reassuring to be recognized for the good things that I’m doing,” Sawyer shared. “This motivates me to keep going.”

NSCS is an honors organization that invites less than ten percent of all eligible students nationwide to join the ranks of its diverse membership each year. A leading interdisciplinary academic honor society, NSCS is made up of scholars from two-year and four-year online institutions.

Founded in 1994 by veteran student affairs professional Stephen Loflin, NSCS has a portfolio of exclusive benefits, including over $500,000 in scholarships, annual chapter funds and awards, professional development resources, exclusive tailored content, and leadership and service experiences. NSCS is poised to support member growth and development throughout their academic and collegiate journey.

The honor society has nearly 300 chapters nationwide and nearly two million lifetime members globally.

“NSCS is more than just a symbol of academic achievement; it is a distinction of honor,” said Steve Loflin, NSCS Founder. “Our scholars are some of the best who have shown an unwavering commitment to academic excellence early in their collegiate journey. These dynamic individuals embody the NSCS pillars of scholarship, leadership, and service, and many go on to become active contributors within their respective fields.”

Notable NSCS distinguished honorary members include former president Jimmy Carter, U.S. Ambassador Dr. Robin Renee Sanders, the late Senator John McCain, and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala.
