The School of Public Health for its Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities’ is hosting its’ 17th Annual Eliminating Health Disparities Conference, October 6, 2017, and 3rd Annual Research Day, October 5, 2017, at the Jackson Convention Complex, 105 East Pascagoula Street in Jackson.
Health Matters is the theme of the Conference. Its program features an update on health disparities in Mississippi and its perspective at the national level, a panel discussion highlighting the importance of health and healthcare in addressing disparities of chronic diseases, and a session on critical tools in reducing and eliminating health disparities.
Keynote speaker is Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, director of the National Institutes of Health’s Nationa Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, which seeks to advance the science of minority health and health disparities through research, training, research capacity development, public education and information dissemination. His research interests include improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities and underserved populations, advancing patient-centered care, improving cross-cultural communication skills among clinicians, and promoting diversity in the biomedical research workforce.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Pérez-Stable led research on Latino smoking cessation and tobacco control policy in the United States and Latin America, addressing clinical and prevention issues in cancer screening, and mentoring over 70 minority investigators.

The conference program is also heavily punctuated with plenary addresses by Dr. Mary Currier, State Health Officer; Dr. Paul Clement Alleyne, Internal Medicine, St. Dominic Hospital; Dr. Myrna E. Alexander, Cardiologist, University of Mississippi Medical Center; Dr. Debra Bartley Rice, Adult Medicine, Jackson Hinds Comprehensive Health Centers, and a special guest appearance of Dr. Cindy Ayers Elliott, a former CEO and Wall Street Investment Banker making a life-changing move.
Research Day will include a series of short, engaging presentations on some of the current research projects of scholars in the Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center, Jackson Heart Study Undergraduate Training and Education Center at Tougaloo, Jackson State University School of Public Health, and Health Disparities Research Training Program in the Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities, providing joint training experiences. The objective of Research Day is to provide a forum to showcase Jackson Heart Study scholars’ research and to stimulate and increase interest in biomedical research careers addressing cardiovascular disease and eliminating health disparities.
