Titled “Transatlantic Souvenirs: A Dialogue of Slavery and Memory in Kongo-Inspired Relief Sculpture,” the free presentation is at 10:30 a.m. at JSU’s Margaret Walker Center for the Study of the African-American Experience.

“This public lecture is associated with the ‘Student Exhibition, Animated World: African Art from James Anderson Collection’ (now showing at the Walker Center),” said Assistant Art Professor Dr. Yumi Park Huntington, who is coordinating the exhibit.

Bridges is an associate curator for African, Oceanic and Native American arts. Her master’s degree and doctorate in Art History are from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where her doctoral dissertation focused on 19th century Kongo ivory sculpture from the Loango Coast of west-central Africa, Huntington said.

The Anderson Collection exhibition showing through June 11 highlights three specific themes: Cosmology in African Art, Images of Animals in African Art, and Images of Ancestors in African Art.
