Jackson State University students will compete at the 3rd Annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl presented by the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.
Devised to address the lack of cooperative and interdisciplinary methods paramount in the evolution of today’s health care delivery system, the RICE Bowl unites a diverse pool of graduate students from various academic disciplines to address complex rural health issues.
Students participating from Jackson State are Leslie Whiting, public health; Lisa Williams, social work; Elfreda Parker, public health; Howard Sanders, social work; James Craig, public health; and JaLise Haney, social work.
“This is an awesome opportunity for public servants to engage with each other and be able to network. I was pleased when I attended the orientation, and I am now more excited about the competition,” Parker said.
The competition provides an experiential learning opportunity for students to join three interdisciplinary teams representing 12 academic disciplines, including business; dentistry; health informatics and information management; health sciences; law; medicine; nursing; nutrition; pharmacy; physician assistant; public health; and social work.
The team activity encourages students to think comprehensively and beyond their disciplines while effectively addressing a realistic case scenario. As a result, students are more inclined to work in interdisciplinary teams and provide the best quality of care.
Williams said, “I am very honored to represent the university. It is a very intensive competition, but I am looking forward to it. All the disciplines are sometimes too compartmentalized in what they do, so I am excited to be able to work with all the different disciplines.”
Jackson State faculty, staff and students are encouraged to support the university by attending the competition.
